Our Story

Our Story

Your Bike Project is a non-profit organisation, specialising in up-cycling and cycle maintenance. We provide an exit strategy for young people in the community who are involved in violence, gangs, and NEETs. We use unclaimed and abandoned bikes for young people to fix and use.

Since 2009 we have been teaching young people cycle maintenance, cycle provision and cycle safety, as well as offering them apprenticeships and other opportunities such as mechanic training. We encourage a healthier lifestyle, mental well-being and social cohesion through cycling within the community.

Since

2009
We recruit young people to help sell bikes and deliver cycle related services to the paying public. Working with young people from Somers Town and Regents Park, they are directly involved in leading and developing Your Bike Project.

We use experienced and qualified youth workers and mechanics. Risk assessment and safeguarding measures are always in place to ensure maximum safety for all participants.

We work to reduce youth unemployment in Camden by providing apprenticeship schemes for young people to have an opportunity to learn and be educated in a skill they can carry with them beyond their youth. We offer the chance for them to train as cycle mechanics, gaining a Cytech qualification. We strive to make a social impact that benefits families across our borough.

We teach cycle repair, fix young people’s bikes for free, as well as provide free lights, helmets, and locks. We teach cycle provision and cycle safety, so young people are aware of hazards on the roads and understand what it means to be part of the community on the roads with other motorists and cyclists.

Our Mission

Your Bike Project revolves around the younger residents of our community, but it is open to everyone. We want every resident in our community to have equal access to resources that will help support their mental and physical wellbeing.

Not only do we repair bikes, we teach and train in a friendly and relaxed group setting. Primarily working with the younger generation, we aim to be a deterrent for anti-social behaviour and gangs.

Working alongside the Metropolitan Police, we hope to bridge a gap between them and young people, attempting to remove social stigmas which only hinder the next generation.
We believe that encouraging a cycling culture will lead to a reduction in air pollution for our neighbourhoods thus ensuring a greener Camden.

We strive to encourage integration and socialisation between young people in counterpart areas to help prevent any postcode/turf wars. Your Bike Project acts as a social lubricant and ice breaker for young people in Camden.

Our Experience

Growing up in Camden ourselves, we understand first-hand the problems and issues young people face. We relied on local-services, facilities, and youth clubs to support our daily lives as our families relied on the government for support. We understood the importance of having relatable and positive role-models to follow. However, the lack of youth services and little support around us left many of our friends feeling disengaged within the community. A lot of them were involved with gangs, drugs, and knife crime.

Consequently, some of them have suffered mental health issues and some have sadly had their lives taken away from them. Many young people in our community today suffer the same, therefore making them vulnerable to be groomed by gangs.

A big issue is that young people do not have an ‘exit-strategy’ from gang-culture, as they struggle to fit back into society with no experience or training. That is why we believe we need to do all we can to help make it an easy escape for those in similar positions as members of our community were.
